Yangon – Bagan – Kalaw – Inle - Taunggyi (10 D /9 N)

Brief Itinerary

Day 01. Arrive Yangon and drive to Moeyungyi resort for bird watching. O/N Moeyungyi Resort. (by car)
Day 02. Morning bird watching in Moeyungyi and drive back to Yangon. O/N Yangon. (by boat & car)
Day 03. Fly to Bagan and check in to hotel and bird watching in Bagan. O/N Bagan. (by flight & car)
Day 04. Bird watching in Bagan. O/N Bagan. (by car)

Day 06. Drive to Kalaw and bird watching. O/N at Kalaw. (by car)

Detail Itinerary

Day – 01: Arrive Yangon & bird watching
After your morning arrival in Yangon and after lunch, you will be driven to the Moeyungyi Sanctuary (a vast area of wetlands) situated approximately 110 km. north to Yangon. You will spend the late afternoon bird watching along the wetlands looking for some of the native birds such as the Blue Throat, Thick-Billed Warbler, Wagtail, Pipit, Golden Plover, Harrier and Kite. You will spend the night in the resort at the sanctuary.

Day – 02: Birding s/s – Return to Yangon


After breakfast at the resort, you will take an early moning boat ride in the sanctuary, looking for the Greater Spotted Eagle, Woolly-necked Stork, Asian Openbill, Sarus Crane, Spotted-billed Pelican, Painted Stork, among thousands of waders and shorebirds. The sanctuary is approximately 40 square miles in area and is inhabited by about 80 species of birds. You will spend the whole morning bird watching in the sanctuary. After a late lunch, you will be driven back to Yangon. If you have never been to Yangon before, then, at the end of the day, shortly before sunset, you will visit the Shwedagon Pagoda and enjoy the effect of the soft early evening light reflecting off of its golden stupa (which is 107 meters high). Spend the night at your hotel in Yangon.

Day – 03: Yangon – Bagan ( By flight & car)
After an early morning breakfast at your hotel, you will be driven to the Yangon airport for your flight to Bagan. You will be transferred to your hotel where you will check and have lunch. In the afternoon, you will have some free time on your own for relaxing, doing more sightseeing or shopping. In the evening, you will take a short boat ride along the Ayeyarwaddy River to look for the Sand Lark, Indian Skimmer, Indian River Tern, Black-bellied Tern, Pied Kingfisher and Little Tren, along with some water birds. After the boat excursion, you will be driven back to your hotel. Spend the night at your hotel in Bagan.

Day – 04: Birding in Bagan


After an early morning at your hotel, you will start day's bird watching in Bagan with the Burmese Bush-lark, White-throated Babbler, White-bellied Minivet, Spotted Owl, Rain Quail, Button Quail, Vinous-breasted Starling, along with another 20-30 species. If you are interested in archeology, you can spend some time visiting famous temples and pagodas built during the Bagan era (about 700 to 1,000 years ago). Included in this sightseeing are: the Shwezigon Pagoda (which was built by King Anawrahta in the 11th century as a religious shrine and which has a magnificent golden stupa), the Gubyaukgyi Temple (with its superb mural paintings of jataka scenes), the caves of Kyansittha Umin (the famous meditation center of Bagan period with the oldest murals in Myanmar), the Htilominlo Temple (noted for its fine plaster carvings and glazed stone decoration) and the Shwegugyi Temple {which name literally means the "Great Golden Cave). Spend the night at your hotel in Bagan.

Day – 05: Birding in Bagan
After an early breakfast at your hotel, you will be driven for about 45 minutes to Chauk where you will cross the Ayeyarwaddy River by a ferry. You will then be driven for another hour and will start the day’s bird watching in the dry deciduous forest where the native Hooded Tree Pie can be found. If you missed the White-bellied Minivet in Bagan, you will have a chance to find it again in this deciduous forest along with the Alexandrine, Grey-headed, Red-breasted and Blossom-headed Parakeets, White-rumpled Falcon, White-eyed Buzzard, Rufus Tree Pie, Fulvous-breasted Woodpecker, Puff-throated Babbler, along with many other species. After a day of bird watching, you will cross the river again and be driven back to Bagan in the evening. Spend the night at your hotel in Bagan.

Day – 06: Bagan – Shan State -Kalaw ( By car )


After an early breakfast at your hotel, you will continue your tour by being driven for a half-day's drive to the Shan plateau. Upon arrival, you will have some time to do some more bird watching in the lowland forest to look for the White-browed Scimitar Babbler, White-bellied Woodpecker, Green-billed Malkoha, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, White-rumped Shama, Yellow-footed Pigeon, Doves, Sunbirds and Prinias. Spend the night at your hotel in Kalaw.


Day – 07: Kalaw Birding – Inle


After breakfast at your hotel, you will go on a short drive to start the day’s bird watching in the nearby Montane Forest. There, you can find birds such as the Silver-eared Mesia, Pin-tailed Pigeon, Hill Prinia, Striated Grassbird, Black Bulbul, Collared Myna, along with many other species. Later that the evening, you will be driven for about 50 minutes to Inle Lake where you will be transported to your hotel in a motorized boat. Spend the night at your hotel on Inle Lake.

 

Day – 08: Inle Birding – Taunggyi
After breakfast at your hotel, you will go on a boat trip on the lake for more bird watching. The Jerdon's Bushchat and White-tailed Bushchat are found only in this part of Myanmar. If you missed seeing any other water or shore birds earlier on this trip, you will have another chance to spot them on Inle Lake. From the boat, you also may see the Brown-headed Gull and the Black-Headed Gull. After lunch, you will proceed to Taunggyi (which is the capital of the Southern Shan State and is 1,430 meters above the sea level and surrounded by many pine trees. Due to its high altitude, it has a moderate climate). In the Taunggyi, you will do some evening bird watching, which will include the Black and White Bulbul, Chestnut-vented Nuthatch, Oriental White-eye and Flavescent Bulbuls. Spend the night at your hotel in Taunggyi.

Day – 09: Taunggyi - Heho – Yangon


After breakfast at your hotel, you will driven to Taunggyi crag to look for more birds like the Giant Nuthatch, White-browed Laughing Thrush, White-throated Fantail, Speckled Woodpigeon, Fire-capped Tip, Maroon Oriole, Little Pied Flycatcher and Crested Bunting. In the late afternoon, you will be driven to the Heho airport for your evening flight to Yangon. Spend the night at your hotel in Yangon.

 

Day – 10: Yangon Birding - Departure
After an early breakfast at your hotel, you will spend the your last day at the Hlawgar Wildlife Park on the outskirts of Yangon. There, you can see the Pale-capped Pigeon, Racket-tailed Treepie, Ruby-cheeked Sunbird, Scarlet-backed Flower Pecker, Striped-throated Bulbul with White Eye and Olive-backed Sunbird. After your day of bird watching, you will be transferred to the Yangon International Airport for your departure from Myanmar.
